Murphy Is Stupid

I hate Murphy and all his stupid laws. He really is quite the pain in the butt if you ask me. Why, you ask, why do I hate him?? Well... it seems he's always making my life a little more difficult. This past Tuesday was no exception.

After nursing school the first big thing you have to do is take your state boards to get your nursing license. Statistically speaking you stand the best chance of passing within the first few weeks after completing your schooling. Last year for LPN I had to wait 2 months because of the classes I was in. So I was expecting to at least a month to take this test. However on Friday I get a phone call from two of my friends stating that they had their authorization to test and that I needed to check my email. I did, and lo and behold there it was waiting for me. The authorization I needed to take that dang NCLEX test that could potentially make or break my future. So I sucked it up and scheduled it for literally 96hrs later. Uuugh. I wanted to study but it seemed one thing after another happened (thank you Murphy) and therefore I did not get near the studying in, that I had planned. But it was ok, because I knew that I was going to have a hotel room that was quiet, and a couple of like minded gals with me to study with come Monday.

So Monday rolls around and I find myself in a car driving to the state capital to get a room to take my test. We check into a 5 star hotel for a 3 star rate and settled in to enjoy a nice quiet evening of study. The more we studied the more worried we became as it seemed that all of us forgot that which we had known a mear 14days earlier. But like it or not come 8am we were going to have to get up and take this crazy test.

Tuesday... test day... I wake up to my friend saying HEY check this out, my pant leg is soaked!!!! I asked what the heck happened and she replied, I got up to go to the bathroom and there is water all over in there, and it was dripping on my pant leg and soaked it!!!! So we stumble to the bathroom (it's 6am) and sure enough there is water POURING in from the ceiling vent. (From the room above of course) and there is a good puddle of water on the floor. Obviously this has been happening for quite sometime throughout the night. It was at this moment that we should of packed our bags and went home, but no... we laughed. We called the front desk and waited for the cops to show because we were quite certain that there was a dead body upstairs and we were on some CSI episode. Alas, no cops showed but it was strange none the less.

The front desk appeased us with a key to another room in which, anytime we had to go to the bathroom or get ready we had to go down the hall and into another room to use the bathroom. Inconvenient, yes, comical maybe, what we needed on the day of our big test definitely NOT! So friend number one gets ready in the other room while friend 2 and myself go back to sleep (our test wasn't until later in the day) Friend one gets breakfast, that takes faaaaaaar longer to come to the table then it should and then comes back to wake us up so we can transport her to her test. She's refreshed, nervous, but belly is full, and she's managed to shake off the upset of the morning. We walk out to her car, put the key in the ignition and... nothing. Seriously NOTHING!!!!!

I'm afraid it's going to be a starter, she's afraid she's not going to make it to her test. (We're out 200 bucks if we don't make it to the test) and we're both dumbfounded. We take a minute gather out thoughts and then spring into action. YOU go get jumper cables from the front desk, YOU call information to find taxi numbers, I will attempt to find someone to jump this thing. We reconvene in a few minutes only to find that the front desk clerk felt that our situation was not that dire and she would not be able to jump our car, or have maintenance do it until "Ummm maybe on my break." Yeah, honey, I have 200 bucks on the line that is saying it needs to be done now!!!! We call the tow truck. He says it'll be a few before he can get there. No big deal, we'll call a taxi. Taxi doesn't answer. Seriously who doesn't do that??? So we sit and wait. Friend 1 has a smoke... I consider taking up the habit, or downing a bottle of xanax.

About the time I ask for a cig the taxi guy calls back and says he'll be there ASAP... translation 15mins or so. Friend 1 was to be at her test by 730... it's currently 715. Finally the tow truck pulls in. He hooks up the jumper cables and tells me to start the car. Now mind you... I'm no mechanic... that's my sister. But it would seem that you would need a FEW minutes for the juice to get down the cables, into the battery, and through the lines to the sources it needs but no, he literally hooked them up and said "Start it." Surprise, it didn't start. He claims it's a starter issue. I'm starting to think otherwise simply because I don't want to be of the same opinion of this guy, cuz he seems to NOT be so smart. We wait another 5 minutes (Time now 725) and the car starts. YAY!!! I call to cancel the taxi but he's pulling into the hotel so we pay the tow truck (50 BUCKS for a jump) and then transport Friend 1 to her awaiting taxi. The taxi manages to get her to her test about 10 minutes late but she's able to take it.

I drive the car around to make sure it's good and charged, and think about this crazy morning. It turns out all the time I thought I had to study this AM has went down the tubes as it is now time to get ready to go take the test that hold my future in the palm of it's hands. I'm leery to turn off the car, but I do, and then immediately start it again just to make sure we're ok.

UUuuuuugh. worst day ever. We all go, take our test, and it's a quiet ride home as we're all pretty sure we failed the dang thing. On the way home we begin driving through area's of smoke and learn that, oh yeah, half of Northern Michigan is on fire, and out alma mater is the shelter for a bunch of evacuee's. (Some of which were classmates) Eventually we all make it home and drop into our respective beds as we are exhausted from seriously the strangest day ever.

We then begin the 48hr wait... 48hrs till we find out if we're out 200 bucks and have to take this wretched test again or if we can begin to start our lives as RN's and start paying off school loans. 48hrs.... 48..... h-o-u-r-s... uuugh.

New's came Thursday... WE PASSED all of us. Thank GOD... We breathe a sigh of relief.... and say thanks to Murphy... because after all that.... we still managed to pass. I hate you Murphy.... but I appreciate you helping us to not have TIME to get so worked up about our test. I might almost think you're alright..... no... no... never mind. I still hate you. But who cares... I'M AN RN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
