Deep Theological Question of the Week

Hey it can’t be fun and games ALL the time. Yeah… you’re right, it totally CAN be fun and games all the time, but here we go anyway. In the same vein of the post last week dealing with Confession, and not being sorry, I’m going to take that one step further. Growing up or in any good Baptist service, during the invitational you hear the usual guilt trip about confession – which was covered already- (See the It's Been Bugging Me post) and then they hit ya with the double whammy. They tell you that if you ignore the Holy Spirit for to long, that Christ will give up on you. Or your heart will be hardened. There’s several different ways they describe it.

Anyway my question today is… Really? Do you believe that? Do you really think there is going to come a point where the Lord will give up on you? How does that reconcile with the thought that “It’s never to late” “Christ will meet you were you are” etc etc. And frankly why on earth would the Lord want to give up on one of his creatures anyway. I mean if he’s this father figure, and you look at it that way… well… I would never give up on my kid.

Is it not really the Lord giving up on you, but you giving up on the Lord? I don’t know. I would hate to think that the Lord would actually give up on one of his creations. I mean we’re stupid, and we’re going to screw up time and again. But to actually give up… it seems pretty hard core. But then again… I have been known to see the world through rose colored glasses. And if He does actually reach a point where he gives up… then what the heck is the prodigal son story all about anyway?

So what do you think? Do you think God likes baseball, and he gives you 3 strikes then kicks ya out? Do you think he gives you fair warning… like 4 fouls, then you’re out? Or do you think he’s ever the optimist who will always be there ready and waiting for you to come back.

I’d prefer to think of Him in the latter, sense, but I’d love to hear your opinion. Perhaps you’ll convince me otherwise….

You went all out for this one, cause this is a tough one. Well, it is going to take a little work and include words such as Holy Spirit, Monergistic regeneration, and unpardonable...none of which I am an expert on...

So I will link you to a site that will save me some typing. It will be a start.

Btw, there is probably a very big difference between God/Christ giving up on you and your heart hardening. I see those as two totally seperate issues.

Just me said...

I don't think they're two separate issues. Maybe your heart just got to a place where you didn't care to listen anymore and God doesn't give up on you, but it's YOU giving up on you.

Well... maybe a better way to put it, is the two issues are related. Does one happen because of the other, or does God give up on you thus letting your heart BECOME hardened.

I'll go read that site before I comment more. lol

All relationships change. All of them. Working through those changes are tough, fun, rewarding and unbearable at times. Confusing most. If indeed can have a relationship with God I would suggest that that relationship will go through a lot of changes and some insecurity, wandering, not wanting to be in it, etc would be a huge part of it. But, it's still a relationship, isn't?
