Five Things I Learned While Watching Angel...

1. Apparently one brief moment of true happiness will make a person (or has the potential to make a person) go bad and kill people. (which by the way, explains SO much in my life over the last year.)

2. Vampires are super pale, apparently this is because they can't go out in the daylight. (However... this guy, Angel... he goes out in the daylight. So I gather this is some sort of selective burst into flames thing.)

3. While I can't really tell the difference, apparently vampires, demons, and the like can smell when someone isn't human. (I can usually only smell whether or not someone has showered... it would be nice though to smell something more. Think of how much easier dating would be, should I ever choose to take up that habit again. "What? You want to go out? Come here let me sniff you...... Sorry... nope. You have no soul.")

4. Speaking of dating.... As if I didn't have enough to worry about when contemplating dating, apparently there are vampires and demons that just roam around and look like real people, and there is no way to tell. Which brings us to helpful hint number 5....

5. Men who like to cuddle after sex are really demons that just want to use your body as their home and when they are done using you to mame and kill other people, you will then have sex with someone else, possessing them, and leaving your body completely viscerated. (Which ironically is not much different from real life....)

One thing that you have to understand about the series (both Buffy and Angel), especially in the early years, is that they really have very little to do with demons and vampires. Sure, Angel is 3oo years old and Buffy is a pint sized powerhouse, but it had little to do with their abilities. What they could do wants as important as what they experienced.

Buffy was about the drama of being in high school. One story was about a girl who is invisible because she was ignored. Some were about love and others about loss. In most teen dramas, the character have their own personal dramas(ie: drinking, drugs, sex, abortion), while in Buffy, the demons were more literal.

Angel was cursed with a soul. Which meant he would be able to have a conscience about his evil. However, if he ever had a "moment of true happiness" then he would revert back to Angelus. Which he did when he waqs back in Sunnydale with Buffy. They ended up having sex and he woke up evil, which was another allogory for how men often change after they "get what they want". That was the writers words, not mine.

Angel's storylines are a little darker and adult, but they are thematic all the same. The demon switching bodies episode you love to talk about was one writer's take on the dating scene in LA. Meeting and "hooking up" can be seen as souless action and a very scary scene. In Angel's world, you might get a demon implanted in you. In our world, the demon is STD's, HIV and unwanted pregnancy.

Anyhow, I watch it because I like the characters. Angel is cool, but Wesley is my favorite. You would probably enjoy Angel more if you understand the Buffy canon, but Angel can stand on it's own.

I hope you are enjoying the series. If not, what is wrong with you?

Btw, Angel can go out in the daytime, but he has to avoid direct sunlight or at least exposure to the UV and stick to the shadows.

Got any other geek questions? I am all knowing in the Whodon universe.
